It's the first picture ever of
this new Jane Eyre production!! And it definitely gives reassurance to our Good Vibes about this miniseries! Both Ruth Wilson and Toby Stephen look fabulous in their roles. Just take a look at them. How exciting!
Brontëana
posts the link to the just
out-of-the-oven press release from the BBC. It says the miniseries will air on BBC ONE. But it answers a few more questions:
The four-part serial also stars Francesca Annis as Lady Ingram, Christina Cole as Blanche Ingram, Lorraine Ashbourne as Mrs Fairfax, Pam Ferris as Grace Poole and Tara Fitzgerald as Mrs Reed. Georgie Henley, who recently starred in the Christmas blockbuster The Chronicles of Narnia plays young Jane while Aidan McArdle plays the visionary John Eshton. The drama is currently filming entirely on location in Derbyshire. So it will be four parts, which should be enough for them not to have to cut out on too much. Unless they decide to take bits off and introduce new, made up bits. Our Good Vibes insist on that NOT happening and the whole thing being very true to the novel and its spirit - shall we trust them?
The 'visionary John Eshton', though, puzzles us. But our Good Vibes cheer us on and wave it away as a mere mistake.
Also it's interesting to see that the whole film will be shot in Derbyshire, not just
Haddon Hall as Thornfield.
Jane Tranter, BBC Controller of Drama Commissioning says: "Sandy Welch's wonderful version of Jane Eyre for BBC ONE will add that special ingredient to the mix of dramas due for transmission this autumn[...]"Producer Diederick Santer adds: "In her brand new adaptation of Jane Eyre, Sandy Welch has mined Bronte's novel for every ounce of passion, drama, colour, madness and horror available, bringing to life Jane's inner world with beauty, humour and at times great sadness.
"The locations we have chosen are stormy and majestic and I hope that Sandy's original take on the story will be enjoyed as much by long-term fans of the book as by those who have never read it." This confirms the latest reports about it being for autumn, not Christmas (though that would have been so fine). Our Good Vibes enthusiastically cheer at Sandy Welch's name just remembering how much we enjoyed North & South with a screenplay by her as well. It seems she set herself a hard task by intending on keeping both types of audiences happy. The result of her minings as described here does sound like a good one. We'll see, we'll see.
Orphaned at a young age, Jane (Ruth Wilson) is placed with her wealthy aunt Mrs Reed (Tara Fitzgerald) who neglects Jane in favour of her own three spoiled children.Well,
that Jane would be little Georgie Henley, but that's alright, we know it's Ruth Wilson's thunder.
Filming is underway until June at the historical medieval castle Haddon Hall, owned by Lord Edward Manners, and other locations across Derbyshire. Many have yet time to plan a pilgrimage to the place and the rest of the
stormy and majestic sites and try to catch a glimpse of our new Jane & co. We hope we will get some pictures in the meantime, though. This one and only new picture has only made us want more!
Oh dear, our Good Vibes are about to jump out of us for joy and excitement!

Hello! I love your blog! I'm a Bronte scholar in Canada and I read BronteBlog nearly every day. I was just wondering, are there any hints as to when the Jane Eyre mini-series will be available in North America?
ReplyDeleteThanks, and keep up the wonderful work.
Thanks for your lovely comment! :) Some time goes into keeping this blog up so - immodest as it may seem - we are glad when we get nice comments like yours.
ReplyDeleteI'm afraid that at this moment everything seems to be very sketchy. Even the airing in the UK is a vague 'in autumn'. Perhaps as the time approaches and news flow faster we will be able to provide you with good news. As soon as we hear anything we will post it.
I'm sorry we can't help more at this stage.
I understand. I will also keep an eye out for news. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteThe only hint is that it will be aired in 2007 (but I think that is probable that if finally it is aired in the UK in autumn, could be earlier).
