Yesterday
we read (also on
Brontëana) that one of the projects considered in the PBS Masterpiece Theatre series was a new version of Jane Eyre:
Upcoming "Masterpiece" productions include the final "Prime Suspect," starring Helen Mirren, and adaptations of "Casanova," "Jane Eyre" and "Sense & Sensibility."
Today several different newspapers (for instance
this one) have the same news. We have checked that it's something included in the PBS Bleak House press release received by the newspapers.

Future episodes of "Masterpiece Theater" include an adaptation of the life of Casanova starring Peter O‘Toole Peter O‘Toole and David Tennant and, in 2007, a new adaptation of Charlotte Bronte‘s "Jane Eyre" and a co-production with BBC of Jane Austen‘s "Sense and Sensibility."
But the question remains... is this Jane Eyre different from the BBC project that
we have commented in previous posts?

I would think it is the same production. It seems as if the other productions mentioned in the articles are BBC productions. Costume dramas are expensive to produce (or so they keep telling us) so money from the U.S. TV networks to show them is welcome. I'm kind of surprised that they didn't sell North and South to PBS, or reserve Jane Eyre and S&S for BBC America, where they did broadcast N&S. But since I don't have cable I'm glad they will be on PBS!

I understand that Toby Stephens is to play Mr. Rochester opposite the talented if relatively unknown Ruth Wilson in the title role.
