'I'd say any adaptation of a novel, and especially a novel like this, should have quotation marks around it'

The official Instagram account of Wuthering Heights 2026 shares a trend which has TikTokers looking as if they were auditioning for a part in Stranger Things, but apparently, actually striking a pose in front of the movie poster as if Heathcliff was kissing them instead of Cathy. But, fortunately, they also share snippets of interviews and the like and Daily Mail picks up on one of Emerald Fennell explaining the quotes in the title, which she wouldn't need to do as it has always been pretty obvious save for the fact that TikTokers felt the need to grab their tiny microphones and their green screens and explain that it meant something else a few months ago.

Emerald Fennell said adapting Wuthering Heights was an impossible task as she explained why she changed the title of her movie. 

The upcoming adaptation of Emily Brontë's classic novel starring Margot Robbie and Jacob Elordi is named "Wuthering Heights", with the quotation marks. 

Now Emerald has admitted why she chose to include the quotation marks in the title.

She said you simply can't adapt a book as 'dense, complicated and difficult' as Wuthering Heights, so you create a version of it rather than a replica.  

Emerald said she consulted the Brontë Parsonage Museum and others who love the book as much as she does before deciding on the title, adding: 'It is Wuthering Heights and it isn't.'

Speaking to Fandango on Wednesday, Emerald said: 'I think it's a lot of things but I think primarily it's because the book means so much to me and it means so so much to so many people, and I've been doing a lot of talking to the Brontë Parsonage Museum and to other people who love this book too because it means a lot to me. 

'It's every important that everyone who loves it as much as I do feels almost a part of it, I guess.'

She continued: 'But the thing for me is you can't adapt a book as dense and complicated and difficult as this book. I can't say I'm making Wuthering Heights. It's not possible. 

'What I can say is I'm making a version of it. There's a version I remembered reading, which isn't quite real. And there's a version that I wanted to stuff to happen that never happened. 

'And so it is Wuthering Heights and it isn't. But really I'd say any adaptation of a novel, and especially a novel like this, should have, you know, quotation marks around it.'

It comes after the film's costume designer Jacqueline Durran has hit back at fans who criticised Margot Robbie's 'hideous' outfits in the upcoming film. (Hannah McDonald)

In the interview, the cast reflects on bringing the novel to life nearly 180 years after its publication, as Fennell shares her early vision for tackling the classic. In a particularly juicy revelation, Elordi opens up about the chemistry between him and Robbie on set, as they felt the emotional intensity between Heathcliff and Catherine.

Metro has actor Archie Madekwe, who starred in Saltburn, speak about Emerald Fennell's Wuthering Heights.

Madekwe, who received the nomination alongside Robert Aramayo (I Swear), Miles Caton (Sinners), Chase Infiniti (One Battle After Another) and Posy Sterling (Lollipop), also shared that he hadn’t seen Fennell’s hotly anticipated next film, Wuthering Heights.

‘But me and Emerald texted about it yesterday. I’m gonna see it very soon!’

Commenting on the furore its casting and sexy, period-inaccurate trailer has whipped up, Madekwe agreed that fans should expect the unexpected and not jump to conclusions.

‘I think that especially with any kind of literature that feels close to people, they feel very protective, but remember that this is also an artist that is giving you an adaptation through her eyes so just take that in [your] stride and be open – and I’m so excited to see what she did.

“Eyre & Flame” is a new card game I created with some similarities to my previous game “Jane Eyre: Fate & Fortune”. It’s a solo card game, with the goal of having just the Jane and Rochester cards left in your hand. This game though was inspired by the gum box games made my Pack O’ Games because I love how small and portable they are. And I wanted a Jane Eyre game that I could carry in my purse or play a quick round on the couch while I am watching TV. I have such specific requirements for a card game! 😊

This is a very quick game - it takes about 3-5 minutes for one playthrough. And it is mostly held in your hand, so you don’t need much table space. It’s also just 12 mini-cards, so super portable. I’m really happy with this one - the cute size and easy gameplay is so satisfying to me.
