Orson Welles wears way too much make-up but turns in a powerhouse performanceEDIT: Check Jane Graham's review on BBC Radio 4's The Film Programme for a more positive approach.
in this melodramatic and moody 1944 interpretation of Charlotte Brontë's classic novel. Joan Fontaine plays Jane, the orphan who has a miserable childhood but sees a kindred spirit in her employer, the mysterious Mr Rochester (Welles).
Also featuring a 12-year-old Elizabeth Taylor, this is one for serious movie collectors only. (Jessica Mellor)
Jane Eyre with Orson Welles is one of the best Jane Eyre movies I've seen. Second only to the 2006 (Toby Stephens) version. So I think that the mirror wouldn't know a great movie if it hit it in the face.
ReplyDeleteOrson Welles is the best Rochester I'v ever seen, only Toby Stephens is very near his performance. His voice, his presence, everything about him IS Rochester. And this film is still the one I like to see again and again, never tired of it. (Little old-fashioned?...)
