A course starting tomorrow,  May 9, at the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute in Arkansas:
Looking for a Home: Literary and Architectural Structure in the Novel Jane Eyre

Description: Charlotte Brontë builds her novel Jane Eyre around a series of architectural structures that Jane inhabits, from the terrifying “red room” of her aunt’s house, to the horrific Lowood School, to Mr. Rochester’s Thornfield, where Jane encounters both love and madness, and, finally, to Ferndean, her heart’s home. We will consider the distinction Brontë draws between “houses” - living quarters - and “home,” that secure abiding place for body and spirit. Kay DuVal, who holds a Ph.D. in English,
specialized in the 19th century British novel, with her dissertation entitled The Quiet Heretics: Religion and the Craft of the Brontë Sisters’ Novels. She will present photographs from Brontë’s environment which provided inspiration for settings in the novel, while bringing insights into the pilgrimage upon which Brontë sets the orphan Jane Eyre.
Participants should provide their own copy of the novel and will be given reading assignments in advance to encourage lively class discussion.
