#6. I Walked with a Zombie (1943) [...]“I Walked with a Zombie” follows Betsy (Frances Dee), a nurse who is hired to care for the wife of a sugar plantation owner (Christine Gordon), who has become afflicted thanks to the island’s history of zombification and voodoo. While working on the film, producer Val Lewton asked writers to use Charlotte Brontë's “Jane Eyre” as inspiration. (Abby Monteil)
Before we had the endless ghost stories and horror movies of today, we had gothic novels. Focusing on the sublime and pondering questions of life and death , gothic fiction began to appear in the 18th century. Many first works of gothic fiction remain popular today, like Frankenstein, Wuthering Heights, and the works of Edgar Allan Poe. Gothic literature has grown and changed over the years, with new sub-genres emerging with their own tropes. The young innocent woman, the wandering in the wilderness, the evil character who is obviously evil, unsettling romance, sometimes elements of the supernatural or paranormal, etc. However, one of the most recognizable tropes of gothic literature remains. In many classic works of Gothic literature, the home in which the protagonist lives becomes part of the story. The home acts like a character, full of emotion, holding onto secrets and dolling out consequences to overly curious journeyers. You could say that gothic fiction is a fancy name for haunted house fiction. (Courtney Rodgers)
Gothic architecture has been a hallmark of some of the finest pieces to come out of romanticism. We see it in Jane Eyre and Wuthering Heights, each set in houses that have a lasting effect on its occupants. The stories move beyond bricks and stone, finding links to human relationships and trauma. The Haunting of Hill House and The Haunting of Bly Manor follow most of the narrative arcs (trauma, inherited property and ghosts created by grief) that were well-established in the era although the series’ source texts only date back to 1959 and 1898. Rebecca, on the other hand, took the genre of gothic romance and gave it a moody air which should explain why it’s such a perfect text to adapt into a gothic film. To conclude, the three titles in their own distinct ways showcase how a good old-fashioned haunted house is so much more than a good old-fashioned haunted house. (Tanzim Pardiwalla)
“The Vanished Bride” by Bella EllisThis book is on my must-read list for the fall. I recently read Wuthering Heights this summer, and I am fascinated by the lives of the Brontë sisters. In this tale, the three sisters are detectives in a historical mystery. After their neighbor’s mysterious disappearance, the Brontë sisters attempt to investigate what happened. I can’t wait to read this!“Jane Eyre” by Charlotte BrontëSpeaking of the Brontë sisters, this book by Charlotte is on the top of my list. Jane Eyre accepts a governess position at a manor, Thornfield. There she meets Rochester, who she begins to fall in love with. The plot thickens as Jane begins to learn about his secret past. I can’t wait to discover what Rochester is hiding! (Avery Owens)
(Camilla Sernagiotto) (Translation)
