Caryl Phillips’ 2015 novel The Lost Child is a bold reimagining of Wuthering Heights. Set in 1960s Leeds, the book explores migration, social exclusion and f
amily and conjures a young Heathcliff before he is taken in by Mr Earnshaw. In 2018, Caryl contributed to Making Thunder Roar, the Brontë Parsonage Museum’s special exhibition marking the bicentenary of Emily Brontë, which invited writers and artists to create a personal response to the most enigmatic Brontë sister.
In this zoom event, Caryl will read from The Lost Child and talk to host Helen Meller about its themes, the Brontës, Jean Rhys and life growing up in the north of England.
Caryl Phillips is the author of numerous books of non-fiction and fiction. Dancing in the Dark won the 2006 PEN Open Book Award, and A Distant Shore won the 2004 Commonwealth Writers’ Prize. His 2018 work, A View of the Empire at Sunset, is a biographical novel of the life of Jean Rhys, the author of Wide Sargasso Sea, which she wrote as a prequel to Charlotte Brontë’s Jane Eyre.
Caryl is a fellow of the Royal Society of Literature, and is currently Professor of English at Yale University. He will join us live from Connecticut for this event.
