Since ages, the ideal of beauty has been deeply ingrained in women. They have come to internalize the ideology which terms beauty as the foremost virtue in women. Charlotte Brontë in her famous novel, Jane Eyre, has not presented Jane as a gorgeous woman exuding charm and beauty in her looks. Rather, by showing Jane’s individualism and her capacity to see life from her own perspective, Brontë has empowered her heroine to value freedom and independence in the most unfavourable circumstances.
The Difference of Female Consciousness Between Eileen Chang and Charlotte Brontë

British woman writer Charlotte Brontë and Chinese woman writer Eileen Chang are two distinguished woman writers and occupy a remarkable position in the literary circle. Therefore, their works have remained a hot topic for researchers. Their respective masterpieces, Jane Eyre and Love in a Fallen City, have become very popular soon after their publication and still have a profound impact on the world. Based on feminist theory, this article deeply and systemically explores the awakening and maturity of female consciousness in different countries by the means of close reading, and digs the similarities and differences of female consciousness in the two novels, hoping to give some enlightenment to modern females.
