Charlotte Brontë’s Jane Eyre is one of the most loved novels of the Victorian era. It is the story of a child, rejected by her family and forced into the cruelty of a school for orphans, who achieves the role of governess and whose hopes for happiness are apparently destroyed by the hidden truth of her fiancé’s past. The journey of Jane Eyre is one of fortitude and humility triumphing over the whims of fate and the cruelty of ill fortune. This dramatization by Alan Stanford was originally commissioned by the Gate Theatre in Dublin and has proved a box-office hit wherever it has been performed, including the Guthrie Theater where it established record ticket sales.
