Quad Cinema (New York) is programming a series of films directed by William Wyler. Including Wuthering Heights 1939. Next chance on December 6:
More Than Meets the Eye: William Wyler
Wuthering Heights
1939, 104m, 35mm, U.S.
Showtimes & Tickets
Sat December 2,  8.55pm
Wed December 6, 8.45pm

The first and, despite its streamlining, finest screen adaptation of the timeless story of obsessive love in 19th-century England. Wyler’s assured helming maximizes Gregg Toland’s Oscar-winning cinematography, Alfred Newman’s score, and a stellar cast; Laurence Olivier and Merle Oberon as soul mates Heathcliff and Cathy are backed up by David Niven, Flora Robson, Leo G. Carroll, Cecil Kellaway, Donald Crisp, and Oscar-nominated Geraldine Fitzgerald.
Village Voice vindicates William Wyler and Wuthering Heights 1939 in particular:
Wuthering Heights breezily chops off fully half of the novel’s plot, yet of all the many later versions, Wyler’s remains by far the one closest to Emily Brontë’s wild romantic spirit. (Farran Smith Nehme)
