Martha Graham's 1943 classic choreography Deaths and Entrances, based on the lives and work of the Brontë sisters will be revived next March at the Lincoln Center as part of the 85th anniversary celebrations of the Martha Graham Dance Company. The new production has been revised by the Taiwanese choreographer Bulareyaung Pagarlava, as Taiwan Today informs:
Taiwanese choreographer Bulareyaung Pagarlava has been invited by the New York-based Martha Graham Dance Company to revise “Deaths and Entrances” for the troupe’s 85th anniversary celebrations, the Cabinet-level Council for Cultural Affairs said Feb. 10. (...)
Bula is one of the talented, important, new voices in the international dance scene,” Janet Eilber, executive director of the group, said. “When we decided we wanted a contemporary companion piece to Graham’s masterpiece ‘Deaths and Entrances,’ we turned to Bula.”
Deaths and Entrances,” which premiered in 1943, is based on the lives of the Brontë sisters, 19th-century English authors famous for their romantic novels, including “Wuthering Heights” and “Jane Eyre.”
According to Pagarlava, injecting new life into the masterpiece is incredibly challenging, but the process can help him understand himself more, share the stage and appreciate the talents of others.
“I want to bring death to another stage, to a higher level by reflecting on it through life experience,” Pagarlava said, adding that he hopes to break the stereotype of understanding death as sad and tragic.(Grace Kuo)
