xt June 22, 2009. Designed by
Celia Birtwell as reported by
Booktrade:
Legendary textile designer and style icon Celia Birtwell has teamed-up with White's Books to design an exclusive new book jacket for Wuthering Heights by Emily Brontë.
Muse of David Hockney and former partner of Ossie Clark, Birtwell has helped style some of the world's leading fashion icons – the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, Jimmy Hendrix, Twiggy and Marianne Faithful to name a few. Her designs have inspired collections across the fashion industry and her ongoing collaboration with Topshop has been one of their most successful to date.
On turning her hand to book design, Birtwell said:
"I have always enjoyed a challenge and designing a book cover for the wonderfully bleak novel, Wuthering Heights was the perfect New Year project. 2009 was branded to be the bleakest year in recent times so what could be better than watching Laurence Olivier in the 1939 version one rainy January afternoon and then putting paint to paper to create the same blustery feelings."
David Pearson, Art Director of White's Books, said:
"Commissioning Celia Birtwell for one of our covers felt like a perfect fit. Here is the Queen of Prints, a person who cares a great deal about British industry and who can effortlessly - and ingeniously - convey the most complex emotions through her designs. This is exactly the kind of collaboration we had hoped for when setting up White's Books; the combination of traditional print values with contemporary style."
Wuthering Heights, designed by Celia Birtwell, will be published on 22nd June 2009.

check our previous posts about this novel which will be published next December):

4. Via
Jane Austen in Vermont, we have discovered this new novel which the publishers link to Wuthering Heights:
A Reliable Wife By Robert Goolrick
Hardback , 304 pages
ISBN: 9781565125964 (1565125967)
Published by Algonquin Books (March 31, 2009)
Rural Wisconsin, 1909. In the bitter cold, Ralph Truitt, a successful businessman, stands alone on a train platform waiting for the woman who answered his newspaper advertisement for "a reliable wife." But when Catherine Land steps off the train from Chicago, she's not the "simple, honest woman" that Ralph is expecting. She is both complex and devious, haunted by a terrible past and motivated by greed. Her plan is simple: she will win this man's devotion, and then, ever so slowly, she will poison him and leave Wisconsin a wealthy widow. What she has not counted on, though, is that Truitt — a passionate man with his own dark secrets —has plans of his own for his new wife. Isolated on a remote estate and imprisoned by relentless snow, the story of Ralph and Catherine unfolds in unimaginable ways.
With echoes of Wuthering Heights and Rebecca, Robert Goolrick's intoxicating debut novel delivers a classic tale of suspenseful seduction, set in a world that seems to have gone temporarily off its axis.

I'm cautiously optimistic about Becoming Jane Eyre, although whoever came up with that title should be banned from all future marketing meetings...talk about pandering. But the topic is intriguing, and in the right hands could be good.
ReplyDeleteWe are also intrigued by it and we think the title might still change. Or here's hoping that the contents will be so good that they will make us overlook it :P
