Cathy and Heathcliff reach new Heights for ITV

A classic adaptation of Emily Bronte’s Wuthering Heights is currently in production for ITV in Yorkshire.

Top UK Indie Mammoth Screen has commissioned leading contemporary screen and television writer Peter Bowker to adapt Emily Bronte’s world famous love story. Two 90 minute episodes are being filmed in Yorkshire, directed by Coky Giedroyc. Tom Hardy will play dark and brooding Heathcliff alongside newcomer Charlotte Riley as Cathy.

Acclaimed television actress Sarah Lancashire will take on the role of housekeeper Nelly, while Andrew Lincoln is Edgar, Cathy’s forlorn husband. Burn Gorman stars as Cathy’s brother Hindley, and Kevin McNally will play Mr Earnshaw.

Wuthering Heights will be executive produced by Michele Buck and Damien Timmer, and produced by Radford Neville for Mammoth Screen. Michele and Damien’s recent credits include Lost in Austen, Agatha Christie’s Marple, the Inspector Morse spin off Lewis and the BAFTA winning Housewife 49 starring Victoria Wood.

Damien Timmer yesterday said:
Wuthering Heights is one of the greatest love stories in literature. We've assembled a first class team to capture all of the novel's rawness and passion.”
Michele Buck added:
“Peter Bowker is one of the country’s leading contemporary writers and we are privileged to be working with him. He has written a highly emotional piece that remains true to Emily Bronte’s epic story.”
Peter Bowker remarked:
"I was thrilled to be asked to adapt one of the great English novels. Mammoth Screen are the perfect company to work with on a project as adventurous and bold as this. In Charlotte Riley I believe we have found the perfect Cathy and Tom Hardy has the power and charisma to be the definitive Heathcliff."
Wuthering Heights has been commissioned by Laura Mackie and Sally Haynes, ITV’s drama commissioning team.

Wuthering Heights is supported by Screen Yorkshire through its Production Fund.

  1. Okay, it's official. I love these two as Heathcliff and Cathy. Charlotte is incredibly close to how i pictured Cathy in that pic.

It's nice to her from the writer they've remained true to the novel. This is great. I still don't think there'll ever be a definitive Heathcliff and Cathy though. They can be interpreted in too may different ways for that.

However, i'm becoming more and more hopeful this will be a great production.

  2. I'm glad to hear that, Faye. I also like Charlotte Riley as Cathy. And hopefully her acting skills will be just as good as her looks.

Agreed about the definitive version, though of course a good version is still doable, and this one is promising in that respect, isn't it?

  3. I completely agree. But , strangely, i'm not concerned about the acting standard for this. I've seen Tom Hardy in lots of things, and i know how well he plays damaged and violent characters like Heathcliff.

As for Charlotte Riley, i obviously haven't seen her in much. But in my logic, they must have a reason for giving the part to a complete unknown.

I just hope it lives up to how promising it looks.

  4. I have heard that Heathcliff commits suicide in this version, If
they can not stick to the book they should not bother to make any more films of this classic book.

  5. That is what they once said but it looks as if it wasn't a very accurate report. In order to be sure we will have to wait and see.

  6. He can't commit suicide. They've cast the second generation. They wouldn't be there if Heathcliff was going to kill himself, surely. The only thing i can think is that they interpret Heathcliff's actions at the end of the novel as passive suicide.

However, i think that the orginal article got this version confused with the film one. Now, someone on IMDB has the script for the film version and i've asked them to send it to me.So, i'll know for sure then.
