Remember the
Ecosse Films Wuthering Heights project, adapted by Olivia Hetreed?
Variety and many other media publish today the following press release:
John Maybury will direct a feature adaptation of Emily Bronte's classic gothic romance "Wuthering Heights."
Robert Bernstein and Douglas Rae of Ecosse Films are producing the project, which HanWay Films will sell internationally.
Olivia Hetreed ("The Girl With a Pearl Earring") penned the script; casting is under way to shoot in the fall.
"Wuthering Heights," published in 1847, is a tempestuous love story about obsessive passion across the class divide, set on the Yorkshire Moors. It has been adapted for film and TV more than a dozen times, most famously in 1939 with Laurence Olivier and Merle Oberon. A 1992 version starred Ralph Fiennes and Juliette Binoche.
The Hollywood Reporter gives a few more details:
Bernstein said he thought "Maybury will bring a provocative edge and modernity to a book which is regarded as the high point in English romantic literature."
Hanway CEO Tim Haslam, tasked with selling the project to buyers from around the world, said: "The eternal popularity of the book shows that this is what people want to see and we believe this story will continue to captivate 21st century audiences." (Stuart Kemp)
The Daily Mail goes further and suggests some names for Catherine's role: the
ubiquituous Keira Knightley and... Lindsay Lohan(!):
Keira Knightley and Lindsay Lohan are among the names on a long list of actresses being considered to play one of the most alluring heroines in English literature.
John Maybury has just signed on to direct a new big-screen version of Emily Bronte's Wuthering Heights in the autumn.
"It's about young passion and how it goes horribly wrong," said Maybury, who made the edgy Love Is The Devil and has just completed The Edge Of Love with Keira and Sienna Miller - both giving their best screen performances to date.
Maybury said he was intrigued by the misguided passion of Heathcliff for Catherine Earnshaw and the repercussions that twisted love has on the next generation.
"It starts in the Liverpool docks, where we first see Heathcliff as a child, the son of a prostitute," Maybury told me.
"Industrial England was so sordid then, so there's something a bit more rugged and raw. This notion of repressed passion is much sexier than the usual bodice ripper."
Working with screenwriter Olivia Hetreed and executives from production companies Ecosse and Hanway Films, Maybury said he's casting his net wide.
Or could Lindsay Lohan play the heroine in Emily Bronte's novel?
"I wouldn't count Keira out, but it's whether or not she wants to get back into period costume. Also, there are some exciting actresses coming up who seem to appear these days fully formed."
He's wary of casting Americans. They may be able to do brilliant English accents, but "that can be slightly annoying, to be honest, and grating, if there's a too-perfect accent by an American actor".
He is a big supporter of the troubled Lohan, though.
"I really believe in the girl and she's coming out from the other side of her problems - she just needs to be treated seriously. I don't count her out," he said.
Robert Bernstein, from Ecosse, said the important factor would be casting the roles younger.
"Heathcliff's usually far too old, and we need an actress who fully understands Catherine.
"This is a story of great passion that has never been done properly on screen and now we have a director who really understands that passion."
If they get this right, it'll be something to cheer. (Baz Bamigboye)

I don't know what to say to that. I like Kiera, i could accept her as Cathy, even though there are certainly better options. Lindsay Lohan??? Buggar me. There was me thinking Angelina Jolie was nightmare casting. Shudders. If she gets the part i will have to consider not seeing the movie. The description of Heathcliff being a prostitutes son bothers me as well. How do they know that? At least they're casting young.
ReplyDeleteLindsay Lohan??? No!!!!!
ReplyDeleteHehe, your reactions towards Lindsay Lohan are similar to mine! But it's just the director speaking - I don't think anyone in their right mind would really cast her as Cathy.
ReplyDeleteI can somehow see Keira, though, but again that's just words. We will have to wait and see. I wonder what we'll see first Brontë or this Wuthering Heights.
Emily made Heathcliff's origins obscure for a reason. But if they absolutely need one I'd say they should lean towards the most likely: that he was Mr Earnshaw's illegitimate son (not by a prostitue, I think). But I'd rather they left it for the audience to speculate.
Seriously, if Lohan gets anywhere near the part i will picket and i'm usually very flexiable with casting decisions when it comes to adapataions of my favourite books. Lohan is all wrong for Cathy. Keira with the right script and director could be a decent Cathy though.
ReplyDelete"Robert Bernstein, from Ecosse, said the important factor would be casting the roles younger."
ReplyDeleteYes, yes, yes, yes, yes!
Let's all hope that the director mentioning Lindsay Lohan at this early stage is nothing but words. I'm not sure the producers would be okay with it if they really want to film a serious version.
ReplyDeleteIt *is* good news that they'll be casting younger, yes. If they show common sense in this, hopefully they'll do too when it comes to Ms Lohan.
I'm very happy they arte casting young. I've always seen the age of the actors as a weak point in previous adaptations. Hopefully all this Keira vs Lilio nonsense has been cooked up by the press after some idle comments by Maybury.
ReplyDeleteI'm hoping for an up and coming young Brit actress for the part like Felicity Jones. She would be and she's young, well she's one year older than Keira but she looks younger than her. I'm stumped on Heathcliff though.
What about Richard Armitage (North and South)for the role of Heathcliff??
ReplyDeleteHmmmm... Much as I like him as an actor I don't really see him in the role of Heathcliff.
ReplyDeleteI don't really like Richard for Heathcliff either. I'm very glad they're casting young this time. I think the over maturity of the actors has been a problem in previous adapations. Hmmm young guys for Heathclifff. The only two that spring to mind are Henry Cavill and Jonathan Rhys Meyers, none of them scream Heathcliff to me. I would like someone who looks a bit gypsyesque. Henry would be ok with a tan. As for Cathy, i agree Felicity Jones would be a good choice.
ReplyDeleteWe wonder if this project will interfere with the Mammoth Screen one . They were preparing a miniseries for ITV.
ReplyDeleteCathy died at 19.
ReplyDeleteThat's a point they should consider before casting anyone.
A girl of 23.24 could be ok.
A film is too short to contain the story.
I would preferr a mini series.
(Hi! from Barcelona)
I would assume that ITV's planned version has been squashed by this one, since it's now late March and there's still no word on that. Cathy does die at 19 but i think they would be pressed to find an actress that age who could handle the role, i think someone who is 22/23 would be okay.
ReplyDeleteI thought Cathy was seventeen when she died in the book, and the bad news is i have heard sienna miller is to play the part as cathy.
ReplyDeleteITV is also now filming a version of WUTHERING HEGHTS and it looks good, Tom Hardy as Heathcliff and Charlotte Riley as Cathy and she looks more like a cathy than Sienna miller.
Heathcliff : the significance of being found in Liverpool is that Liverpool was the CENTRE OF THE UK SLAVE TRADE at that time, he is castaway, a non caucasian foreigner, he is not a love child of Mr Earnshaw or a son of a prostitute! he speaks foreign 'gibberish', not liverpudlian english!
ReplyDeleteAnonymous, you are presenting the interpretation that you prefer as fact. Heathcliff's origins are unstated and unknown.
ReplyDeletekaya scodelario got the role of cathy i think!
