This brief background information will make you wonder where we are getting at and what the connection to the Brontës is, but read on and you will see.

The Devil and Daniel Webster - a remake of an eponymous film by William Dieterle from 1941 - was Alec Baldwin's directorial debut. The film dates back from 2001, but - according to the IMDb trivia section - due to the lack of funds for post-production the movie was 'shelved' until My Own Worst Enemy Productions acquired the rights.

The film has now been renamed Shortcut to Happiness and its release is scheduled for tomorrow.

Here is where the Brontë bit comes. We have come across this article on the film from The New York Post which includes this tiny, intriguing mention:
My jaw dropped to the floor as a trial commenced before a jury that included Truman Capote, Jacqueline Susann, Mario Puzo, Ernest Hemingway, Emily Dickinson and Emily Bronte. (Lou Lumenick)
However, the IMDb credits for full cast and crew say the juror is Charlotte Brontë, rather than Emily. This Charlotte is played by the woman in the picture: Katherine O'Sullivan, who is Irish.

The Brontës really turn up in the most unexpected places. If anyone goes to see the film we'd love to hear what you think of this new, wholly unexpected Charlotte Brontë.
