We don't know if the producers of Brontë have read our previous post, where we made a few remarks on the way the Brontë film project has been promoted in the Cannes Film Festival.

Now, the AMC website clarifies the writing credits of the film:
Writing credits
Original Script by -
Angela Workman
Additional material by -
Charles Sturridge
There's also some other corrections. Besides Michelle Williams, Bryce Dallas Howard and Evan Rachel Woods, there's only one survivor from the original cast, Brian Cox (Patrick Brontë). As previously, there is no trace of Ben Chaplin or Hugh Dancy, but now even Jonathan Rhys-Myers is gone!

  1. I can understand the need to replace the sisters with actresses who are bigger box-office draws, but dropping Jonathan Rhys Meyers is just sad. He's getting a lot of great press with his recent work, not to mention extraordinarily talented (by today's standards.)

Good luck finding another actor capable of carrying the role, producers. Come to think of it - Bronte fan that I am - with casting three American actresses in the lead roles and omitting Rhys Meyers, I'm running out of reasons to remain interested.

  2. Jonathan Rhys Meyers as Branwell was what I was looking forward to the most in this film.

Branwell was Charlotte, Emily, and Anne's biggest inspiration for the intense characters in their work. Without him, perhaps a part of the genius that made the Bronte's special wouldn't have come to fruition.

Jonathan is the only actor of my generation I can see pulling off such a complex, and poignant character. It saddens me to no end to see him no longer a part of this project.

  3. Oh, let's just wait and see. The project is still in its early stages so it could turn out brilliantly or it could be even worse than Devotion. There's no way of knowing.

JRM is probably unavailable for the filming dates, which is a shame. But that is not to say that no one else can play Branwell.

I don't agree that Branwell was necessarily the sisters' "inspiration for the intense characters in their work". I agree on the point that he was the initial driving force of the juvenilia and the one who encouraged - indirectly - his sisters to write, though.

As I said in some other post. We will be able to judge how true to life the film is by the treatment of the Brontë men, Branwell included, of course, which are always very delicate 'characters', who tend to be easily maligned.

    But we'll see.

  4. My disappointment was deep to see that Jonathan Rhys Meyers is no longer on the cast list. I always go out of my way to watch him in any feature, and was particularly eager to see him in this one.

While never one to discount the skill of American actors and actresses, it gives me pause to consider the product we may get now that Rhys Meyers is no longer there to anchor and give substance to the cast.

  5. I'm sad to see people disappointed by JRM 'disappearance' from the cast.

Let's keep our hopes up! We may yet be surprised at what's to come :)
