Wide Sargasso Sea or the Secret of the First Mrs Rochester

The story of the courtship and marriage of the heroine of the eponymous novel by Charlotte Bronte, Jane Eyre, to her employer, Mr Rochester, develops classical themes of the 19th century. But who was Jane’s predecessor, Edward Rochester’s mysterious first wife? In Wide Sargasso Sea, the renowned author Jean Rhys answered this question with a story that was to become a modern classic.

Tereza Brdečková, Alexandra Büchler, Bernie Higgins and Chantal Wright discuss the two novels and their lasting impact.

Another recent talk given in New York (Re-reading Jane Eyre, check this post for more details) is reviewed on the 2006 BBC Jane Eyre imdb board
The session was great. The Thalia Theater in Symphony Space is quite intimate (for a theater). There were over 100 people in the audience. Cynthia Harris read an excerpt from the book. She read the scene just after Jane and Rochester put out the fire in Rochester's room. She was wonderful. (...)

The panel discussion included Jennifer Egan, Siri Hustedt and the Scottish author, Margot Livesey, whose works include the novels "Homework," "Criminals," "Banishing Verona," and others and who is currently a writer in residence at Emerson College. All three women are smart, articulate and funny. They talked about how they came to read JE and how powerfully it affected them. Topics covered included: Passion, Rochester's tormenting of Jane (making her jealous by using Blanche Ingram), the Red Room, Confinement, Freedom, Saint John, Charlotte Bronte, and many more. There was no discussion of JE2006. (jenknyc)
