A very interesting alert for tomorrow, April 25, in New York:
Rereading Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë

Writers and Brontë enthusiasts Jennifer Egan, Siri Hustvedt and Margot Livesey celebrate the beloved classic Jane Eyre, the heart-searing story of a plain, orphaned governess who struggles at an oppressive boarding school before moving to Thornfield, eventually falling in love with her mysterious employer, Mr. Rochester. The event coincides with a new Masterpiece Theatre presentation of Jane Eyre. Cynthia Harris reads an excerpt.

Jennifer Egan is the author of two novels, The Invisible Circus and Look at Me (National Book Award finalist), as well as a short story collection, Emerald City. She has published short fiction in The New Yorker, Harper’s, Zoetrope and Ploughshares, and her journalism appears frequently in The New York Times Magazine. She is the recipient of a National Endowment for the Arts fellowship and a Guggenheim Fellowship and was recently a fellow at the Dorothy and Lewis B. Cullman Center for Scholars and Writers at the New York Public Library.

Siri Hustvedt is the author of a book of poetry and three novels, The Blind Fold, The Enchantment of Lily Dahl and What I Loved, and her work has appeared in both The Paris Review and Fiction, The Best American Short Stories 1990 and 1991. Regarding Brontë’s famous work, Hustvedt “read Jane Eyre for the first time the summer after I turned 13 and then again as an adult. It remains one of the most exciting, deep, and romantic gothic novels ever written”.
