An alert and some recent events that sadly we have received a little bit too late, but that are interesting enough to report them. For the sake of completeness.

The alert is for today, December 12 from Thomas University, Thomasville, Georgia:
Thomas University Book Club :
Jane Eyre
by Charlotte Brontë

The discussion will be led by Dr. John Fenstermaker from FSU.
We will discuss this book on Tuesday, December 12, 2006, from 7:00-8:30 PM.

Thomas University, 1501 Millpond Road, Thomasville, GA 31792

The club is open to students, faculty, staff, and the community as way to come together to discuss books of current interest. The club meets in the TU Campus Center each month. More info.

The other alert happened just yesterday, December 11, at the Music Department in Hunter College, CUNY University, New York:

Monday, December 11, 2006, 7 PM
Hunter College Choir
Paul F. Mueller, Conductor

The Hunter College Choir with student soloists and orchestra

John Rutter, Magnificat and
Shafer Mahoney, Three Bronte Songs

Assembly Hall, North Building
We have information of two Emily Brontë poems put into music by Shafer Mahoney:
Two Brontë Songs

Composed by Shafer Mahoney, lyrics by Emily Bronte. Vocal score for SSA chorus and piano accompaniment. With vocal score notation, piano accompaniment and introductory text. Series: Doreen Rao's Choral Music Experience. 10 pages. Published by Boosey & Hawkes. (HL.48004972)

Choral. 6.8x10.5 inches. Duration 8m.

Contents:
I Know Not
Cold, Clear, and Blue
We suppose I Know Not refers to I Know Not How It Falls On Me (8 June 1839, first published 1910) (read it here). The other poem is Cold, Clear, and Blue, (12 July 1836 or earlier, first published 1902) the earliest extant poem of Emily Brontë (read it here).

Curiously both poems have other musical versions. I Know Not Hot It Falls On Me was put into music by Nick Peros in his album Songs (2000) and Cold, Clear and Blue has a musical setting by John Mitchell included in The Earth, The Wind and The Sky (1977).

And finally, last week, the Burnaby Art Gallery, Burnaby, British Columbia, Canada held the following event:

Fireside Reading: Wuthering Heights 16 yrs & up

Storyteller Barbara Karmazyn will be reading selections from Wuthering Heights, bringing to life the suite of 1930s woodcut illustrations by Claire Leighton on exhibit. Sit by the fire, relax, sip a belly-warming beverage and be entertained in the age-old fashion of listening to a great tale. This very special evening will certainly be a night to remember! Let the gale-force winds blow fierce outside; at this fireside reading of Wuthering Heights, we'll be dry and snug inside.
7:00-9:00pm, December 4

An example of the Claire Leighton illustrations can be seen on the right. Courtesy of this website.
