IcNewcastle publishes today an article about Brontë, the film written and directed by Angela Workman that will begin its shooting in October. The article more or less repeats the same information that we have previously reported, i.e. the casting of Nathalie Press and Emily Barclay as Emily and Anne Brontë.

Nevertheless, there are some new things. About the Yorkshire accent, the producer Alistair MacLead-Clark from AMC Pictures says:

The foreign stars won't be the only cast members to have accent coaching.
Alistair
said: "They will all have vocal coaching to develop a Northern accent and we want them all to sound the same, with the same intonation.

"We decided that the accent doesn't have to be as exact as it was in the 19th century because some parts of the world may not be able to recognise their words.

"All of the cast have responded really well. To start with, they have tapes to listen to and in a few weeks they will come to the table, so to speak, and show off their homework."

Brontë is due to be released late 2007 or early 2008.

And a new name for the cast seems to have surfaced.

Hugh Dancy signed onto the production last Thursday to play a publisher.

Hugh Dancy has recently been nominated to the Primetime Emmys (Best Supporting Actor) for his performance in the Channel 4 TV-Movie Elizabeth I.

Is Hugh Dancy our George Smith ?

  3. Regarding accents: as long Yorkshire is not dominated by R.P. accented inhabitants, then all is alright.

I wonder if Thackeray will make an appearance in the film?

  4. More importantly, WHO is to play Heger? They're not going to leave him out, are they??

  5. tattycoram - the subject of the accent of the Brontës has long been a subject of speculation. The most widespread conclusion is that they didn't exactly talk in a broad Yorkshire accent. They would have tried and sound as standard as possible. However, Charlotte was said by Mary Taylor to have an Irish brogue and according to Mrs Gaskell Mr Brontë spoke in a strong Scottish (!) accent. I guess Emily might have resorted to the Haworth dialect sometimes. So I think they should bear all that in mind, but perhaps it's asking for too much.

As for Thackeray - we'll see.

Liz - they wouldn't dare, would they? He's a key person!
