Some news across Europe

From June 29 until July 2, the Spanish PEN Club organized the 1st International Congress "La mujer, artífice y tema literario" (The woman, author and literary topic). In the opening conference, the Spanish writer Ana María Matute said, according to El País:

With regard to the great women writers of history, Matute highlighted from Spain a Emilia Pardo Bazán, "an out-and-out author, very complete", and from the rest of the world, Virginia Wolf and above all, the Brontë sisters, "something extraordinary and unusual in their time. They had a bad time because of their courage and the talent they had."

V@altesinanenews (in Italian) covers the retrospective of Jenny Beavan, costume designer of Zeffirelli's Jane Eyre, that took place in the recent Sannio Film Festival (more info on this post of ours and on this other one from the Brontë Parsonage Blog) (picture)

The Italian weekly magazine Sorrisi e Canzoni TV releases a collection of books with the name "I Capolavori" (The Masterpieces) for just sixty cents (of euros) to be bought with the magazine. July 3 was the date for Cime Tempestose (Wuthering Heights). The translation is from "Classici Oscar Mondadori".

And finally the Munich StadtMuseum in Germany organizes a series of projections under hte common denominator Filmadaptionen nach Romanen von Jane Austen & Co. (Film adaptations of novels by Jane Austen & Co.). Today, July 11 is the day for Die Waise von Lowood (i.e. Robert Stevenson's 1944 Jane Eyre). Last Sunday Stürmische Höhen (William Wyler's 1939 Wuthering Heights) was projected.
