Despite Robert Stevenson's name as director on the credits, the influence of Orson Welles seems everywhere in this classic 20th Century Fox version of Charlotte Brontë's broodingly romantic novel, in which Welles also co-stars as Mr Rochester.
The early scenes in the monstrous Lowood are particularly effective, thanks in no little part to Peggy Ann Garner's plucky portrait of young Jane, and Elizabeth Taylor's heartrending account of her doomed companion, Helen.
Following the arrival of Jane (now played by a rather too diffident Joan Fontaine) at Thornfield, however, thunder and lightning - and Orson Welles - take over.
