Polly Teale's After Mrs. Rochester is being performed in several productions around UK and the US lately (the last but by no means the only one can be found on this recent post of ours).

The Sewell Barn Theatre Company presents “After Mrs. Rochester”
by Polly Teale at the Sewell Barn Theatre, Constitution Hill, Norwich on 23rd – 25th and 29th – 31st March and 1st April. All performances begin at 7.30 pm. Foyer opens at 6.45 pm.

How are great novels written? What sows the seed of creativity?

In a locked room, a woman struggles to write a book and come to terms with the ghosts of her past. Ever present is her inspiration and demon, the first Mrs. Rochester, Jane Eyre’s mad woman in the attic.

The book to be written is The Wide Sargasso Sea. The woman is its author Jean Rhys. Like the first Mrs. Rochester a child of the West Indies, she was sent away to school in Edwardian England. From there her life was both painful and passionate. This vibrant and sensational play captures the essence of her life and work and gives a tantalising insight into the creative process.
