Buñuel's WH on DVD

Next March 22, Abismos de pasión, Luis Buñuel's very personal version of Wuthering Heights - shot in Mexico in 1954 - will reappear on DVD for the Spanish market as part of a pack of three films directed by Luis Buñuel in his Mexican period.

Regrettably the pack, edited by Divisa Films, only appears in its original Spanish version, and as far as we know with no subtitles at all.

Quoting María Seijo Richart's paper published in Brontë Studies, (Vol 27, March 2001, p. 27): Despite all its defects, Buñuel considered his film to be more faithful than Wyler's. He makes clear his intentions of 'being respectful to the spirit of Emily Brontë' after the opening of the credits. There are situations and dialogues directly taken from the novel, but we could argue that Buñuel uses Brontë's words in order to reflect his own obsessions. In fact, his personal universe appears so intermingled with hers that it is almost impossible to distinguish one from the other.

In the humble opinion of this half of BrontëBlog that is, precisely, what makes a novel version valuable. Not only because it illustrates the novel more or less faithfully but because it recreates it without betraying the spirit.
