The American Book Review has just released the 100 best first lines from novels. Sadly, we have to report that not even one from a Brontë novel made it, which we find a bit puzzling. But funnily enough the opening line of Wide Sargasso Sea is on the list - though it only made it to number 99.

99. They say when trouble comes close ranks, and so the white people did. —Jean Rhys, Wide Sargasso Sea (1966)
