Gilmore Girls is a show full of cultural references. No wonder that Brontë ones appear from time to time. But, let's face it, how many young girls in an American show have a Charlotte Brontë poster in her room? Here we have a list of all the Brontë references:

"Love and War and Snow" (Season 1- Episode 8)
Written by: Joan Binder Weiss
Original Airdate: 12/14/2000

Dean: Wow, she brings me cookies. How can I repay her?
Rory: How about a little Charlotte Brontë?
Dean: How about something else? (Gives Rory a kiss)
Rory: That's good too.

"The Nanny and the Professor" (Season 4- Episode 10)
Written by Scott Kaufer
Original Airdate: 01/20/2004

Jason: There are hundreds of great books in here, ranging from the classics - "Wuthering Heights" - to the real classics - "Valley of the Dolls."
Lorelai: Nice taste
.

On the right you can see Rory in her Yale dorm in the episode: "Tippeccanoe and Taylor too"(Season 5 -Episode 4). Original Airdate: 10/12/2004. Look at the portrait that hangs behind Rory. Do you recognize it?

"Say Something" (Season 5-Episode 14)
Written by Daniel Palladino
Original Airdate: 02/15/05

Paris: Althea! Janet! Come here!
Rory: You hate Althea and Janet.
Paris: Granted, they know nothing of Ukrainian politics or the periodic table, but when it comes to boys, they're brighter than the Brontës.

We used the transcripts of the episodes that are available here.

  1. Another reference: it's from a recent episode and no transcript is available. I think it's from Twenty-One is the Loneliest Number, but don't quote me. I have all this season on my computer so if I get a chance I'll rewatch and let you know.

It's about Rory when she was a little girl. She was crushed to learn Charlotte Bronte was dead and wouldn't be able to attend a party she was having.

  2. Thank you very much. If you're finally able to trace this reference, we at the BrontëBlog we'll be very glad to include it with the others. Regrettably we had to rely exclusively on the published transcripts, because here the new season is still unavailable.

  3. Here's the reference:
SOOKIE: I can't believe Rory's turning twenty-one. It seems like just yesterday she was crying because you told her Charlotte Bronte couldn't come to her sleepover, because she's dead.

  4. First of all I`m sorry to be off topic but...
Does anyone know who that girl is on the other poster? The black and white one... I just can´t seem to find the info. Is it just a random Playboy-Bunny? Or should I be ashamed cause she is famous and I couldn´t figure that out all by myself? ;)

    1. It's Gloria Steinem. She went undercover as a Playboy bunny to write an expose about the Playboy Club. http://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2013/may/26/gloria-steinem-bunny-tale-still-relevant-today
