We have to make an addition to our previous
post devoted to DVD releases this month. Next October 25 (the day all the new DVDs seem to come to the stores) the "Masterpiece Theatre Romance Collection" will be released.
The collection presents three sweepingly romantic BBC mini-series of adulterous passion at odds with social convention. ANNA KARENINA (2001) adapts Leo Tolstoy's classic novel about the wife (Helen McCrory) of a high-ranking Russian official who carries on a torrid affair with an army officer (Kevin McKidd) in a daring documentary style coupled with luxurious period-piece costumes and set design. An innovative production of Emily Brontë's Gothic WUTHERING HEIGHTS (1998) follows the tragic tale of two lovers (Orla Brady and Robert Cavanah) thwarted by class differences on the windswept moors of 19th-century England beyond most normal film adaptations to capture the entire novel. And RECKLESS (1997) and RECKLESS: THE SEQUEL (1998) offer a modern soap opera about a young doctor (Robson Green) who falls in love with the wife (Francesca Annis) of a coworker and decides to seduce her away from her husband. The technical information provided on
