The National Endowment for the Arts (USA) has recently awarded the Opera Theatre of Saint Louis, MO, with a grant, in the category of Opera-Access to Artistic excellence, of $50,000 to support the American premiere of Jane Eyre, a contemporary opera by composer Michael Berkeley and librettist David Malouf. The two-act opera, based on Charlotte Bronte's novel, will be performed at Webster University's Loretto-Hilton Center.

On the opera theatre's web you can find more information and the dates of the event:

Composer Michael Berkeley has transformed one of the best-loved Victorian novels into a spellbinding chamber opera. A strong, passionate young woman becomes a governess and falls deeply in love with her employer; her story is sketched in dreamlike sequences which focus on Jane and Mr. Rochester and the madwoman upstairs at Thornfield Hall. With soprano Kelly Kaduce (the unforgettable Sister Angelica in 2004) in the title role, Jane Eyre will be a powerful evening in the theater.

Conductor: Andreas Mitisek
Stage Director:
Colin Graham
Set Designer: Erhard Rom
Costume Designer: Jane Greenwood
Lighting Designer: Mark McCullough

5 performances are scheduled for June 4,8,10,14 and 16 (2006)
