The British Airports Authority and the travel website Expedia have carried out a survey among 2,100 people a prelude to their own travel books prize ceremony tomorrow. The result is that "wearing" a book is as much of a fashion accessory as a scarf or a handbag.

The latest literary pressure is keeping up with the rest of your fellow travellers and commuters. Bookshelf contents are fast becoming as studied and planned as outfits as a way to impress others.

The rest of the conclusions are as absurd and odd as that to any book-reader, and it's a sad state of things when even a book is chosen by taking a sideways look at your neighbour.

At any rate, the final relevant results include Wuthering Heights (editions with "fashionable" covers only) as one of the titles that made it to the top 10.

We'd like to second the following words by Elyas Choudhury, an Expedia director who said:

"We seem to have lost sight of the fact that reading a book should be a personal, enjoyable and relaxing experience, not one dictated by social pressure."
