8. Wuthering HeightsEmerald Fennell's fearless reinvention of Emily Brontë's 1847 novel is not for Brontë purists, but it is an exhilarating take on the book and a striking example of Fennell's typical artistry and daring. Margot Robbie and Jacob Elordi are fiery as Cathy and Heathcliff, the classic lovers made for each other but separated by class. Their connection is at once frankly sexual, romantic and caustic in the cruelty they often display toward each other. With that cruelty, Fennell restores the vehemence often overlooked in Brontë adaptations. Departing from prettified period pieces, the film's visual style is an enticing kaleidoscope of colour and fashion. Fennell drops in some comic moments, and at times dares to be over the top (Heathcliff on horseback, Elordi's bad wig flying in the wind) but its excesses are a small price to pay for such ambition. However much Fennell toys with the details – and why not? the book still exists – she captures the essential enduring passion of Wuthering Heights and its class-bound time. (Caryn James)
Et revoici Les Hauts de Hurlevent au cinéma. Le roman de Brontë connaît une nouvelle adaptation pus sombre qu’à l’accoutumée et, étonnamment plutôt convaincante. Contrairement à ce que ne le laisser craindre le battage médiatique et la promotion ininterrompue au moment de la sortie (rarement bon signe, ces derniers temps, tant la présence médiatique des équipes de films semble inversement proportionnelle à la qualité du long, en témoigne le raté Les K d’Or, mais c’est un autre débat et la fin de la digression). On peut s’interroger sur ce qu’il adviendra de cette version glamour du XXIe siècle, si la patine du temps le rangera dans la catégorie « grand film » ou « drame de bonne tenue » mais il a le mérite de faire un pas de côté par rapport à ce que propose le cinéma grand public ces derniers temps.Qualité technique impeccable (testé en 4K) et bonus peu enthousiasmants. A charity is inviting people to explore the Brontë countryside while raising money for palliative care at a brand-new fundraising event in Haworth.Sue Ryder has launched its first-ever Brontë Pub Walk, which will take place on Saturday, August 15, and will offer participants a choice of either a five-mile or 10-mile route through some of the area's most famous landscapes.Sponsored by Bulloughs Cleaning Services, the walk will take in Stanbury, Ponden and the outskirts of Oakworth before finishing on Haworth's historic Main Street.
