The essay strives to demonstrate the novel Jane Eyre goes beyond simply alluding to fairy tales, or readapting elements from fairy tale plots, but actually contains the narrative structure of a fairy tale. Reading the novel in the light of this structure reframes how the magical and supernatural elements of the novel are read in relation to the plot; gives new narrative function to the settings of the different houses Jane stays at in the novel; and explains the tension between the plot of Jane’s growing independence with her final decision to marry Rochester through J.R.R. Tolkien’s concept of eucatastrophe.
