Tonight’s Turner Classic Movies lineup ties in with the latest book from the network’s TCM Library publishing arm: But Have You Read the Book? 52 Literary Gems That Inspired Our Favorite Films by Kristen Lopez. As its title suggests, the book looks at 52 cinema classics and the literary works that served as their inspiration. Five of those titles will air on TCM this evening: Wuthering Heights (1939), the gothic romantic drama based on the novel by Emily Brontë; Mildred Pierce (1945), the film noir drama based on James M. Cain’s novel; To Kill a Mockingbird (1962), an adaptation of Harper Lee’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel; Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (1953), the musical comedy adapted from the book of the hit 1949 stage musical; and To Have and Have Not (1944), a romantic drama adapted from the novel by Ernest Hemingway, who offered contributions to the screenplay along with fellow literary great William Faulkner.

Within these pages, Turner Classic Movies offers an endlessly fascinating look at 52 beloved screen adaptations and the great reads that inspired them. Some films, like Clueless—Amy Heckerling’s interpretation of Jane Austen’s Emma—diverge wildly from the original source material, while others, like One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, shift the point of view to craft a different experience within the same story. Author Kristen Lopez explores just what makes these works classics of both the page and screen, and why each made for an exceptional adaptation—whether faithful to the book or exemplifying cinematic creative license.
In a recent podcast, Ticklish Business, the author discusses Wuthering Heights 1939 and the book:
That's right, our host Kristen Lopez is the guest as we celebrate the upcoming release of her first book, But Have You Read the Book: 52 Literary Gems That Inspired Our Favorite Films. We're talking about 1939's adaptation of Emily Brontë's Wuthering Heights. Along for the ride is Patron Jacob Haller, helping Samantha and Kristen deconstruct the messy world of Catherine and Heathcliff.
