ABC (Australia) shares a clip of Frances O'Connor speaking about her film
Emily.
The Guardian features Ruth Wilson and mentions her wonderful take on
Jane Eyre, though we disagree in its appraisal of the original Jane.
Straight out of Lamda (pretty much), Wilson landed the title role in Jane Eyre, the 2006 BBC reboot. That adaptation was critically acclaimed for its subtlety and intelligence. She took a character who is such a landmark in the canon – jittery, a bit needy, trampled – and turned Jane Eyre into someone much more substantial and self-possessed. She was nominated for a Bafta and a Golden Globe. (Zoe Williams)
A bit needy? The same Jane who says this?
Still indomitable was the reply—“I care for myself. The more solitary, the more friendless, the more unsustained I am, the more I will respect myself. (ch. XXVII)
A recent podcast showed that
USA Today book editor Barbara VanDenburgh is a Brontëite. From the transcription:
Barbara VanDenb...: [...] If you're one of those geeks who gets really into the way a story is told and why, then this book is for you.
James Brown: I take it you're one of those geeks.
Barbara VanDenb...: My dog is named after Charlotte Brontë. I am one of those geeks.
The literary Brontë sisters had one brother. What was his name? (Maria Paget)
