“Wuthering Heights”: British director Emma Rice has dazzled Berkeley Rep audiences with stage spectacles such as “The Wild Bride” and “Tristan & Yseult” with Cornwall’s now-defunct company Kneehigh Theatre. Now she’s back with her reimagining of Emily Brontë’s classic gothic novel “Wuthering Heights” and her new theatre company, Wise Children.
Rice’s inventive adaptation adds music and dance, puppets, modern dress and whimsical use of props to Brontë’s grim tale of terrible people being terrible to each other on the moors. (Sam Hurwitt)
That last title, based on the Brontë novel, will make its U.S. premiere Off-Broadway at St. Ann's Warehouse in Brooklyn later this year before heading to Berekely Rep, Wallis Annenberg, and Chicago Shakespeare Theatre in 2023. (Logal Culwell-Block)
Released by Canongate, Revenge of the Librarians is testament to Gauld’s knack for literary humour and his ability to translate these witty takes into understated, visual comedy. The 150 cartoons within are a smorgasbord of simply executed jokes that can be easily consumed one after another, tackling all levels of the literary sphere from Game of Thrones to Jane Eyre. (Daniel Milroy Maher)
ScreenRant lists the most 'frightening' characters played by Ralph Fiennes:
Wuthering Heights 1992- Emily Brontë's classic novel has received numerous adaptations of varying quality over the years. This 1992 adaptation failed to win over critics but found a decent amount of approval among audiences. Its tale stretches for years but ultimately ends in unrequited love for orphan turned wealthy gentleman Heathcliff.
The Heathcliff character is a complex one, perfectly suited for an actor with Fiennes' range. Though audiences initially sympathize with him, his love for Catherine begins to chip away at his rationality and morality. He is a wholly destructive character, with the intent to remove any and all obstacles to Catherine's love. Fiennes's portrayal is a haunting one that is well worth a look. (Mick Jones)
The San Francisco Standard reviews Reluctant Immortals by Gwendolyn Kiste:
In Reluctant Immortals, Bertha (the first wife of Mr. Rochester in Jane Eyre) and Lucy (one of the victims from Dracula) take the spotlight as two women who are undead and haunted by the men who hurt them. Together, Bertha and Lucy embark on a journey that takes them from Hollywood to the Haight in their Buick LeSabre. (Rachel Zarrow)
ASA Authors interviews the writer Julie Janson:
How do you think literature helps to shape our understanding of ourselves and others?
As a child living in a Housing Commission home in Boronia Park, Sydney, I was bookish - my mother took me the 4 kilometre walk to fill a pram with books from the Gladesville library. She loved reading and art. Literature opens our minds and hearts, and we don’t feel so alone. Through female characters such as Jane Eyre, written by Charlotte Brontë, I grew in self-respect as a female.
