Visit ‘Another World’ in Brontë Country
18 September – 3 October 2021, Wednesday – Sunday, 11am to 4pm

The wild Yorkshire landscape, childhood fantasy worlds of the young Brontës and the contrasting domesticity of their lives in Haworth are the inspiration for ‘Another World’, a new commission at the Brontë Parsonage Museum by the award-winning design practice NEON.

Opening on Saturday 18 September the installation runs until 3 October as part of ‘Summer Unlocked’, a programme of free cultural and sporting events taking place across Bradford district. Throughout the opening weekend various free activities including performances from international street performance agency Fool’s Paradise will take place in the Parson’s Field. Giant sloths and Raijū - legendary creatures from Japanese mythology – will wander freely on Saturday 18 while oversized fish on stilts and a selfie obsessed mermaid will entertain on Sunday 19 September.

Rebecca Yorke, Interim Director of the Brontë Parsonage Museum, said: “We wanted to create a piece where the Museum meets the moor and ‘Another World’
will be just that. Set up in Parson’s Field, the large meadow at the back of the Parsonage, this area connects Haworth with the moorland that is so closely linked with the Brontës and their work. We are proud to be involved in ‘Summer Unlocked’ and thrilled to have this opportunity to showcase work that builds on our reputation as one of Bradford’s significant, internationally-renowned cultural organisations, as the whole district looks forward to Bradford’s bid to be UK City of Culture in 2025.”

Commissioned to bring together culture and play over the summer, the 9m long, 4m tall and 9m wide installation will resemble a giant washing line, as fabric flutters and floats from the structure, like sheets hanging out to dry. Audiences will be able to interact with the work, play among the billowing ‘sheets’ or lie underneath, considering the domestic scene. NEON has used materials from the local countryside including agricultural fleece, a material used to protect crops in frosts, and steel cabling which reflects the electricity cables that cross the modern landscape.

Harry Jelly, Audience Development Officer for Contemporary Arts Commissions at the Bront Parsonage Museum, said: “One of the most striking things about ‘Another World’ is how the installation moves with the everpresent wind that ‘wuthers’ across the moors. NEON excel in creating joyful, interactive public artworks that engage audiences of all ages and in ‘Another World’ they have created an installation that connects the heritage and landscape of the area in a playful and evocative way.”

Summer Unlocked is supported by Bradford Council, The Leap and Bradford 2025. This installation was made possible with support from Bradford Council and Arts Council England.
