The Guardian mentions some of the 'Hot But Horrible men in fiction'.
From Heathcliff (obsessive stalker, possible murderer) to Rhett Butler (rapist, member of the Ku Klux Klan), there is truly no shortage of male characters in popular culture who are held up as masculine ideals but, in reality, deserve a restraining order – and Hot Priest certainly falls in to that pantheon. So, honestly, I’m a bit bewildered by the passion some female viewers have felt for Hot Priest. Emily Brontë definitely meant readers to like Heathcliff, as the Brontë sisters had a decidedly – shall we say – infantile concept of ideal masculinity, possibly due to drinking too much dodgy water in Yorkshire. And as for Margaret Mitchell, well, it is probably best not to look into her racial politics if you still get off on Clark Gable grinning up at Vivien Leigh. (Hadley Freeman)
Los Angeles Times announces the start today of The TCM Film Festival.
The festival’s arching theme is the rather broad umbrella of different kinds of cinematic love, including “Bromance” (“Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid”), “Magnificent Obsession” (“Wuthering Heights”) and “Wartime Romance” (“From Here to Eternity,” with Mary Owen, daughter of star Donna Reed, in attendance). Attractions include “Hollywood Home Movies: Treasures From the Academy Archive” and a panel discussion on “The Complicated Legacy of ‘Gone with the Wind.’” (Michael Ordoña)
Trinitonian announces the opening today of the play You on the Moors Now at the Stieren Theatre.
The production of “You on the Moors Now” sets to bring the Bro[n]tean and Austenian heroines readers love to the stage this weekend. The play follows the protagonists from “Little Women,” “Jane Eyre,” “Wuthering Heights” and “Pride and Prejudice.” In the alternate, absurdist reality of “You on the Moors Now,” the woman reject their marriage proposals, causing an ultimate battle of the sexes. The play opens April 11. (Aidan Carr)
