Even before Patrick Brontë became the famous father of literary genius, his story was a remarkable one. The eldest of ten children born into a poor Irish family, he went on to become a successful graduate of Cambridge University and a respected Anglican minister. Neither his roots nor his experience at Cambridge are very well documented but this talk looks at what we do know about Patrick's first thirty years and asks the question, 'did Patrick need to re-invent himself to inhabit this identity he had created and if so, at what cost?'
