10.30 (doors open at 10.00): Talk by Professor John Bowen on Wuthering Heights
John Bowen is Professor of Nineteenth-Century Literature at the University of York. His great passion is nineteenth-century fiction and he has a particular interest in Dickens, as well as Wilkie Collins, Anthony Trollope and the Brontës. He wrote about the Brontës, among other writers, in the OUP History of the Novel in English.
He was a contributor to BBC2’s Being the Brontës (2016). He makes frequent radio appearances and was recently on Radio 4’s In Our Time, discussing Wuthering Heights, and Beyond Belief, discussing Jane Eyre. He has written articles and recorded videos for the British Library on, among others, Melding fantasy and realism in Wuthering Heights, Walking the landscape of Wuthering Heights, and Who is Heathcliff?
14.00: Readings from Emily Brontë’s poems.
2018 is Emily Brontë’s bicentenary year. Following on from the talk on Wuthering Heights in the morning, we will be taking a look at Emily’s poetry. Members of the Brussels Brontë Group will introduce and read a selection of some of her best-loved poems.
