An alert for today, April 7 in Settle:
Emily Brontë - Talk by Sue Newby
Saturday, 7 April 2018 - 12:00pm
Friends' Meeting House - Settle

200 years on, what inspired Emily Brontë's novels? 2018 is the 200th birthday of Emily Brontë, radical poet, iconic daughter of Yorkshire and author of one of the most widely celebrated novels in the English language, Wuthering Heights.
In this talk, Sue Newby of the Brontë Parsonage Museum will shed some light on this most enigmatic of writers. What was shaping her imagination as she grew up, the fifth child of an insignificant and impecunious church minister in the obscure West Yorkshire village of Haworth? How did her relationship with her talented siblings contribute to her creativity?
You will also explore the influence, inspiration and comfort Emily drew from nature and the landscape of her beloved moors on the doorstep of her Parsonage home.  And finally, look at the changing fortunes of Emily’s reputation down the years, from the surprising advice of a contemporary American reviewer to burn Wuthering Heights, to her firm, if solitary place right in the heart of English literature.
At the end of the talk there will time for you to ask Sue questions.
