This paper aims at applying a novel reading grid to the comparative literary works written by Zoe Dumitrescu-Bușulenga, from an interdisciplinary perspective, Surorile Brontë and Ştefan Luchian . That is to say, our attention will be focused on the exceptional destiny of some personalities of British literature (Brontë sisters) and of Romanian artistic society (the painter Ștefan Luchian). In other words, we propose a critique of the critics related to some central ideas of ontological semantics essence that articulate the relationship between Subject and Universe: the purpose of creation, the tragic vision on life and the writer’s human condition in life.

Gender Issues in Charlotte Brontë's Jane Eyre

The aim of this research is to explore gender issues reflected in Jane Eyre written by Charlotte Brontë. Jane Eyre centers woman as the second sex under the domination of men. Woman autonomy is part of gender issues which becomes a concern of feminist. Descriptive qualitative method through library research was used in this research by applying a feminist literary approach. Through this approach, women issues were digged out. The data were collected from primary data and secondary data. Primary data are collected from the novel Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë, while secondary data are collected from books and journals that related to the topic. The result of the research shows that gender issues in the novel did exist and were reflected both through male and female characters and through classification of gender manifestation of woman and men.

A presente dissertação tem como objetivo investigar a sedimentação sócio-histórica do romance de estreia de Charlotte Brontë, Jane Eyre (1847), a partir de seu foco narrativo. Ao atentar à fortuna crítica da obra, em especial às resenhas que seguiram a publicação do romance e às críticas materialista e feminista, distinguem-se duas tendências, dois modos de entender Jane Eyre. Por meio da análise de trechos do romance, visa-se ilustrar como essas duas vias de leitura são possíveis por conta da posição ambígua da narradora-personagem dentro da sociedade vitoriana. Expandindo o conceito de Terry Eagleton do in between, argumenta-se que, por estar sempre em uma posição entre as classes alta e baixa e por desejar inserção, Jane relata e denuncia as violências que permeiam a sociedade vitoriana e, ao mesmo tempo, incorpora o discurso dominante, mesmo quando esse vai contra ela mesma. Entende-se, assim, que o romance retrata a situação contraditória da classe média e o impacto de viver nessa posição na própria consciência do indivíduo, isto é, na sua visão de si e do mundo, como observado na voz da narradora de Jane Eyre.

Muffled Woman. Gender and power in Jean Rhys’ Wide Sargasso Sea

Este artículo presenta un análisis de la novela Wide Sargasso Sea (1966) de la autora dominicana Jean Rhys desde un enfoque interdisciplinar, utilizando la teoría crítica feminista y los estudios poscoloniales. Dicha novela brinda otra perspectiva de la historia del personaje de la lunática en Jane Eyre, de Charlotte Brontë. En Wide Sargasso Sea el personaje femenino criollo adquiere una voz y se ponen a la luz las dificultades de vivir en la sociedad patriarcal y poscolonial de Dominica. El objetivo de este estudio es analizar cómo la protagonista ha sido marginalizada, desplazada y silenciada en la sociedad patriarcal de esa época a punto tal de perder su identidad y, eventualmente, volverse loca.
