The Brontës: A Musical
Books Are Magic
225 Smith Street, Brooklyn, New York 11231
Tuesday, July 11 at 7:30 PM - 8:30 PM EDT

Books Are Magic welcomes Sheila Kohler, award-winning author of Becoming Jane Eyre, professor Nora Nachumi, and composer Lucas Syed and lyricist Sarah Ziegler of The Brontes: a Musical for a discussion about one of England's most prominent literary families, their importance, and the process of turning that family into a musical!

The panel, presented in conjunction with the first workshop performances of The Brontës: a Musical presented by Piper Theatre at the Old Stone House/Washington Park on July 9th, 16th and 23rd, will focus on why the impact of the Brontës, why they matter, and how they inspired an original musical. The evening will include musical performances of two songs from the show.

About the play: Based on extensive research, and workshopped for 3 years, the musical explores the struggles of the Brontës - Charlotte, Emily, Anne, and their brother Branwell - to live authentically as artists in 19th century England. Now regarded as a superstar of English literature, Charlotte Brontë went on to write her masterpiece Jane Eyre, spearhead her sisters’ writing careers (Emily wrote Wuthering Heights.), and break through the Victorian glass ceiling. A contemplative musical, literary without being stuffy, it depicts the challenges of being a woman ahead of her time.
