The Edinburgh auction has now taken place and Charlotte Brontë's note (lot 141) has been sold for £24,000 (the estimate was £10,000-12,000).

We hear, though, that even though the Brontë Society was outbid when it came to the note, they did manage to buy the Gaskell volumes with Charlotte Brontë's envelope (lot 83) for £850 (the estimate was £300-400).
