Wuthering Heights and its afterlife in Cambridge

This Monday, January 7, the Institute of Continuing Education of the University of Cambridge begins a course on the Brontës:

Wuthering Heights and its afterlife

This course addresses critical and creative responses to Emily Brontë’s 1847 novel, considering how it has been rendered in a variety of forms including film, the graphic novel, song, fiction, and poetry. We will consider how adaptation operates as interpretation and evaluate what Wuthering Heights has meant to audiences since its publication.

Aims of the course:

1. To guide participants through an in-depth reading of Emily Brontë’s Wuthering Heights.
2. To examine the afterlife of the text, its critical reception, literary responses and rewritings and filmic adaptations and to ask how such responses may reinterpret the novel
3. To provide a grounding in critical theories of reader reception and adaptation
4. To show how participants will be able to apply the knowledge gained in their study of Wuthering Heights and its afterlife to other literary texts.
