A play on Patrick Brontë opens today, November 11, down under:
Saucy Pat
A new play about the Brontës
Written and Performed by Cenarth Fox
Creator of The Real Sherlock Holmes and Aunt Georgy
Patrick Brontë was an Anglican clergyman with three famous daughters.
At first he was plain old Paddy Brunty, Irish blacksmith and impoverished dreamer. But his rags to riches life was just that. Here was a humble, rural parson whose mundane life had the odd sprinkling of sex, murder, politics, danger, heroism, love, tragedy, farce and a fondness for dogs.
Biographers gave him heaps. "The cassocked savage … should have been shot … should never have had children". But was he really cruel and eccentric and the world’s worst poet? Why did he get such a bad press?
And did he help or hinder his famous children?
Retired Anglican priest, the Reverend Michael Last, is writing a book, Famous or Forgotten Fathers, about ancient clergy who led fascinating lives.
He begins with the controversial curate from Haworth in Yorkshire, Saucy Pat.
Paddy Brunty comes alive with stories some riotously funny, some desperately sad.
We know his creative children but what about their old man? And why was he called Saucy Pat?
Travel back in time at Labassa and meet a truly remarkable man.
