Landscape and character in perfect symbiosis

Joanna Briscoe talks in The Guardian about (moor) landscapes and literature, particularly Dartmoor:

Though Wuthering Heights is actually as ragingly gothic as they come, Emily Brontë used landscape and character in perfect symbiosis, so that Cathy is Heathcliff, death bleeds into life, and the moors create the ungovernable characters of the children who tumble across them, all merged and shaken and vital to each other's story. The Yorkshire moors are forever captured by the Brontës; Exmoor has Lorna Doone, Bodmin Moor Jamaica Inn, but Dartmoor's only famous novel is The Hound of the Baskervilles.

We have several publications that also misrepresent the Brontës as Mills & Boon-like romance literature. Everything comes from an article by Susan Quilliam in the Journal of Family Planning and Reproductive Health (J Fam Plann Reprod Health Care 2011;37:179-181: “He seized her in his manly arms and bent his lips to hers…”. The surprising impact that romantic novels have on our work (Read it here). Needless to say the actual article doesn't mention the Brontës:

Snuggling down in bed with a romantic novel, dreaming of your very own Heathcliff, could be damaging your relationship, according to a leading psychologist (Ruth Harrison in Marie Claire)

The genre today is so broad, with so many sub-genres, that many people will have read a romance novel without realising it, Campbell says. Twilight could easily be characterised as romance fiction, as could much loved tomes Pride and Prejudice, Gone With the Wind and Jane Eyre. (Judith Ireland in The Canberra Times)

EDIT: The Heathcliffs and Catherines endured because one of them died at the height of their passion. Their love couldn’t have lasted at that feverish crescendo forever. A samozřejmě mistrovské herecké obsazení, v němž divadelní i herečtí matadoři (Judi Denchová) často jen sekundují mladým talentům (Mia Wasikovská, Jamie Bell). Hlavním problémem Fukunagyho Jany Eyrové je ale její nepřekvapivost. Ale w "Jane Eyre" czuć przede wszystkim ogromny szacunek reżysera do wiktoriańskich czasów, bohaterów, którzy nie mogą odnaleźć się w tej rzeczywistości, nie potrafią nazwać swoich uczuć, choć czują i pragną jak wszyscy, bez względu na miejsce w historii. To także obraz wspominanego wyżej anglikańskiego wychowania - ukazanego nie w kontekście intymnych zahamowań Jane Eyre, tylko jako świadectwa złamanego, naznaczonego samotnością, cierpienień i odrzuceniem życiorysu kobiety (słynne pensjonaty dla dziewcząt, warunki życia na skraju nędzy, przyuczanie do zawodu guwernantki, przywłaszczanie majątku sierot). Brontë nie znosiła tego pręgierza, widziała w nim jeden ze stygmatów czasów. Amerykański reżyser próbował pokazać ówczesną moralność w kontekście religijności. Anglikanizm przekłada się na wszystko - zamyka emocjonalnie, grozi wiecznym grzechem i potępieniem. W powieści Jane Eyre walczy nie tylko o godność, to w imię walki o ochronę swojej duszy, jej ocalenie, odrzuca miłość. Doceniam nową adaptację "Jane Eyre", reżysera który poszedł za głosem Charlotte Brontë (nawet chyba nie tyle za scenariuszem, który napisała Moira Buffini, scenarzystka filmu "Tamara i mężczyźni" , ile właśnie za powieścią) w warstwie dokumentującej mentalność bohaterów, warunki życia definiowane przez pochodzenie i stan posiadania. Niestety najważniejszy wątek, czyli wątek miłosny, nie został obroniony. Dlatego wolę inny film i drugą z sióstr. (Anna Serdiukow in Stopklatka) (Translation)

A retired teacher writes in the Odessa American how important the Bible is in order to understand some of the themes and topics of classic literature:

As for “Wuthering Heights,” what should we expect of Miss Brontë, a minister’s daughter, in an era when the Bible was the only reading of most households? (Charlena Chandler)

Not in the Brontës' household, though. Although the sisters were thoroughly acquainted with the Bible, they also read much else besides.

Clarín's Ñ Magazine (Argentina) discusses the evolution of YA/children literature:

¿Cómo ha ido cambiando la literatura pensada para jóvenes? ¿Es cierto que se ha vuelto más sórdida? ¿O siempre lo fue? We see the point, but it's a bit forced to define the Brontës' literature as fantastic (although it contain topics and structures that can be read from a fairy tale point of view). Although we are pretty sure that the Jane Eyre bits about the green men will be M. Dubois's favourites.
