One of the most beloved novels in all of English literature, Jane Eyre is about a young governess who finds herself in love with her employer, who has a terrible secret. Bold and controversial at the time it was written, its story of a woman grappling with love, independence and integrity still resonates with modern readers. It also became the model for a whole genre of gothic romance, from Rebecca to the novels of Victoria Holt and Catherine Cookson.
