Anne is the only Brontë sister not having a film made of one of her novels this year. It saddens us that 191 after her birth and long after her literary worth has been widely recognised by most people approaching her work she's still 'the other Brontë sister' and the one that those who do not care to dig a little deeper neglect to consider.
While this can provide a nice 'connoisseur' feeling to her fans, overall we would wish that readers and admirers of her work could stop once and for all clarifying who she is - or even reminding people she was there at all.
She was born on a day like today in Thornton in 1820 and, contrary to her fears, we find much that is valuable, memorable and inspiring in her life and works. Do celebrate her and her work today: read her wonderful words and either spread the word or enjoy that privilege that comes from knowing that there were
three Brontës sisters and
all of them were great authors.

EDIT: Maddalena De Leo sent us her particular tribute to Anne Brontë. A poem:
A Longed for Redemption
Sweet, little Anne
Last but not the least
Of those famous three
Whose fame and power
Go still the world round
Sweet, little Anne,
So kind and humbly patient
How modest and sensible
Why for so many years
By us shamefully neglected?
It’s your moment now
Many are your admirers today
And your novel is a film at last.
Sweet, little Anne
Please only forgive
Our somehow stupid blunders.

I just finished reading Agnes Grey for the first time, and I thought it just wonderful. It had such a different feel than Charlotte's or Emily's books, a softer, sweeter tone...I enjoyed it very much. It was nice to be able to take a look inside her thoughts as there is so little out there from her.
ReplyDeleteI've already told my neighbors to read it, and will continue to spread the word...her wisdom, insight, and experiences would benefit many. The 'Tenant' is next.
Happy Birthday Anne...and thank you!
