A new exhibition with reproductions of letters, poems, sketches and paintings by the Brontës just opened in Lancaster, PA, organized by the Lancaster Literary Guild:
A Portrait of the Brontës:
An Exhibition of the Family's Artwork and Letters
The novels of the Brontë sisters are esteemed as canonical works of British literature, yet it is the personal lives of the members of this great literary family that hold the most fascinating stories. Charlotte, Emily, Anne and Branwell spent their childhood sketching and painting, and writing their “Little Magazines” under their father’s watchful eye. They spent a great deal of their time teaching the children of wealthy Yorkshire families, pursuing literary projects, writing letters and painting and sketching. Though it is well known that the young Brontës were powerful writers, their artwork has been less understood. They were talented artists; Charlotte and Emily in particular often illustrated scenes that were used as inspiration in their writing. Through a collection of letters and artwork that span their short lives the exhibit reveals the friendships, sorrows, and haunting loves that consumed the lives of this extraordinary family.
