Constrained by their background and their sex, three girls grow up in an isolated parsonage on the Yorkshire moors with an overbearing father and a brother unable to cope with the weight of his family’s expectations. Against this backdrop, the Brontë sisters write novels and create powerful and passionate characters that have ensured their place in our literary history. Heathcliffe, Cathy Earnshaw, Arthur Huntingdon and the first Mrs Rochester come to life as the sisters’ story unfolds. Brontë is a fascinating glimpse into the life, mind and works of this extraordinary family.
An exciting opportunity for you to see a production that was a sell-out success when it toured in 2005, presented by two renowned, award-winning producers of theatre, The Watermill and Shared Experience.
Brontë is directed by Nancy Meckler and written by co-Artistic Director of Shared Experience, Polly Teale, whose previous plays for the company include the highly-acclaimed Jane Eyre and After Mrs Rochester which both transferred to the West End.
Details of the rehearsals can be read here or on the Watermill's Theatre Facebook.

  1. Oh I would so very much like to see this! I missed it first time round, but I don't think I'll be able to make it to the Watermill... do you think it'll tour?

This is a phenomenal show. I defy even the hardest hearts to not be moved by this bittersweet masterpiece. This plays follows the Bronte family's story, from its charming beginning to its devastating end, all the while ingeniously tying in the sisters' imaginary worlds with the real one they inhabited. The characters' mutual love and conflict, hope and ambition, pride and jealousy, and grief and despair, reach deep into the viewer and wrench out the heart. A definitive cast, inspired design, haunting music, and the heartbreaking poetry and conceits of the script come together to form a production which should stay with you for the rest of your life.

Five stars. Please go and see it!
