Well, nothing much to report today, yet there's one more
Shutter Island mention in the news. From
PopMatters:
Nobody involved was surprised that Martin Scorsese’s latest — the gothically inflected psychological thriller “Shutter Island” — is chockablock with references to everything from the Bronte sisters to “I Walked With a Zombie.” (John Anderson)
What they don't seem to know - though
Mr Scorsese does perfectly well - is that the Brontë sisters and I Walked with a Zombie have but one degree of separation between them: Jane Eyre.
The
Victoria Advocate has an article on writer (etc.)
Katherine Anne Porter.
Porter was born in 1890 in Indian Creek, Texas but moved to Victoria with her family when she was 15, Unrue said. It was at the Victoria library that Porter first discovered "Wuthering Heights" by Emily Bronte, whose work became a model for her own for a long time. It was during this time that Porter's interests began to shift from acting and performing to writing.
"That library helped change the course of her life. She would read and reread that book and it, along with other books, helped form the basis of her education," Unrue said, adding that Porter only had one year of formal schooling. (Aprill Brandon)
Not so influenced by the Brontës is Lindstrøm from the band
Lindstrøm & Christabelle, who says to
Pitchfork,
Well, the thing is, I have a degree in literature. I've been reading everything from Homer to Brontë, all the history of world literature. But after I decided to quit studying, I haven't really read anything. I still have those books, and I really enjoy reading them, so maybe I should pick up some more serious stuff from the mid 80s or something. (Tyler Grisham)
A not at all positive review of Anne Brontë's The Tenant of Wildfell Hall on the blog
'The Doors To The Deathless Are Open...' and a few gorgeous pictures of Wycoller Hall (supposedly Ferndean Manor in Jane Eyre) on Flickr uploaded by
Jaypeg.

I didn't realise there was a supposed original for Ferndean! Very interesting.
